Stromatolite is one of the oldest known microbial ecosystems dating back to 3.4 – 3.7 billion years ago, way before the dinosaurs 245 million years ago.  They are considered fossils, but rather than the remains of a single animal or plant, they are made up of ecosystem fossils. Layered rock structures that occurred over thousands of years called Microbial mats mainly made up of cyanobacteria. Cyanobacteria uses photosynthesis to turn sunlight into energy producing oxygen.  They changed the Earths atmosphere making the the earliest known evidence of life on earth.
